The collection balances peaceful moments, like the resonant waltzes and Balinese-inspired scales of "Sunbeam Nap" and "Purring," with the sneaky, jazzy atmosphere of a "Midnight Prowl." Specific feline quirks are brought to life through clever technical choices, including chord clusters that mimic "Making Biscuits" and a pompous, Debussy-inspired march for the "Box Inspector." The album also captures a cat's high-energy side, using active rhythms and the full range of the keyboard to depict the frantic chase of a laser pointer and the chaotic frenzy of "The Zoomies." Each piece serves as a musical portrait of feline life, blending technical precision with an invitation for the performer to play with character and even improvise.

The pieces adapt complex cinematic textures for developing pianists, ranging from the sweeping, epic melodies of fantasy adventures to the punchy, suspenseful accents of dinosaur-themed thrillers. The suite pays homage to specific eras, using whole-tone scales to evoke 1950s sci-fi, jazzy dynamics for 1960s detective scores, and Philip Glass-inspired key changes for horror. Emotional versatility is a key focus, offering performers "Spaghetti Western" rhythms alongside a "Lonely Romance" that features customizable endings to suit the player's mood. By blending driving rhythms and daring harmonies, the album transforms the piano into a cinematic stage for everything from pirate sea shanties to giant robot battles.

Everything Waits for the Lilacs

This six-minute work was commissioned by Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska, the title of which is borrowed from Margaret Avision's poem, "Thaws". The music makes expansive use of the entire keyboard and is tinged with a distant romanticism that in part reflects a frozen landscape waiting for the arrival of spring. At times the music echoes appropriately with a strong sense of longing and desire and ends with a very loud repeated chord that just can't seem to break free of the fading grasp of winter as each repetition increasingly reverberates with more ghostly overtones. This work is included on the RCM ARCT Piano Performance Diploma Repertoire List E and has been used by many students as a required Canadian composition in national and international piano performance competitions. 11 pages.
